So anyone that knows me knows how unfit I am, and how much of a slob I have been the past few years. Now I’ve bucked up, joined the gym and actually been. Walking to the gym I started to feel nervous. Was I going to be judged by everyone? Where do I sign in? Do I sign in? Where is my class at? What are the showers like?
Truth is, starting at the gym is intimidating. Its like being the new person in class. You feel like an outsider and you feel like everyone knows you have no idea what you’re doing. As you walk through the gym you see a mass variety of different machines and know at some point you’re going to be stood there confused thinking, ‘how the hell do I move the seat?’ You see the weights area dominated by men staring at themselves lifting and think ‘stay clear of that area.’ You wander round clueless and try 5 different machines in the space of time that one girl has been sat on the same machine.
I did all of these things, and also stood outside confused not knowing how to get through the door until someone let me in and explained it, wups. I found the best thing for me was to just be honest to an instructor, book on an induction and book on a class and admit I’ve never been to a gym before and I have no idea what I’m doing. My gym is great they are constantly running induction classes where a trainer walks round with you, shows you how to use everything and goes through all the muscles they train, how to use the machine and what would be best for you. If your gym doesn’t do these classes I’m sure if you ask an instructor, they will be happy to help, that’s what they are there for so don’t by shy. If like me, you don’t have a work out plan or any clue what to do, I would advise booking a class. I booked in to a legs bums and tums class, maybe not the best thing to jump straight into because that class is tough. But you don’t have to worry about the whole science of working out and figuring which exercises to do, how many reps or how long to hold it for because an instructor does all that for you and it pushes you a lot.
A big misconception is that everyone in the gym is already super strong and has super stamina. However, everyone is in there for the same reason; to get fit, loose weight or stay healthy. During my class, I realised I wasn’t the only one that was a weakling and it made me feel much more comfortable knowing that we were all in the same boat.
If doing it alone scares the living bejesus out of you then get a gym buddy, you can laugh at each other, compete and have a catch up. Either way from my experience it’s the build up that’s worse than the actual doing exercise in the gym. Hope I’ve helped.
